Lombok, Indonesia — The Mount Rinjani National Park Office has announced the temporary closure of all nature tourism and hiking destinations within the park from January 1 to March 31, 2026, citing safety concerns and environmental conservation efforts.
The decision was made to mitigate the risk of hydrometeorological disasters during the transition into the rainy season and to allow the park’s fragile ecosystem time to recover. Extreme weather conditions during this period can increase the likelihood of landslides, flash floods, and other natural hazards, posing risks to visitors and park staff.
All official hiking routes leading to Mount Rinjani will be closed during the three-month period. These include the Senaru, Torean, Sembalun, Timbanuh, Tetebatu, and Aik Berik trails, which are among the most popular access points for climbers and nature enthusiasts.
The park authority has also outlined several important dates for visitors who have already planned trips before the closure takes effect. Online ticket reservations through the eRinjani system will close on December 28, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. WITA. The last check-in date for hikers is December 31, 2025, while the final check-out date is set for January 3, 2026.
According to the Mount Rinjani National Park Office, the temporary shutdown is not only a preventive safety measure but also a critical step in preserving the mountain’s natural environment. Reduced human activity during the closure period is expected to help restore vegetation, trails, and wildlife habitats affected by heavy use and seasonal weather conditions.
Park officials have called on the public and tourism stakeholders to support the initiative, emphasizing that conservation today ensures the sustainability of Mount Rinjani for future generations.
“Rinjani is not just for today, but for tomorrow,” the announcement stated, echoing the park’s conservation message: “Love Rinjani With Care.”
